There are no experts in Parkinson’s – Oh, yes there are!

Let’s start this post with a little exercise. Go and look in the nearest mirror and what do you see? Do you see your tired eyes or your hair that needs cutting because you haven’t had time. Do you see all that you see as defects and that is maybe all you are accustomed to seeing.

Look again in that mirror. See someone who is wise and wiser every day as you navigate a life with that unwanted passenger that is Parkinson’s steering you in directions you would never have foreseen.

That person looking back at you is so important, that person has experience in dealing with a terrible foe and will have developed strategies – I’m sure – to ward off it’s advances as best they can.

That person that you see, is an expert. An expert in their journey with Parkinson’s. Far more than any University Degree and study on what Parkinson’s is or isn’t. The person in the mirror is the perfect expert to find solutions to manage this life with Parkinson’s. But for some, you might have a person peaking over your shoulder as you look into that mirror. They may not be constantly there with you as they may have other commitments, but they too are an expert and will have learned from you how they can support you.

Seek out the information that you need, not that someone insists you should have.

Seek out support that works for you, whether it be exercise classes, counselling, or just socializing with others with Parkinson’s.

Honor that person in the mirror for the strength they must summon up every day to face a life derailed by Parkinson’s.

You are the Expert.

You are Brave and you are Strong.

I am a retired Social Worker having retired in May 2024. I had been a Social Worker for over 20 years and for the sake of my health and wellbeing I chose to retire early. I have some literary projects underway and am enjoying the freedom of no longer working. Working on my projects at my own pace and enjoying my new hobby of lawn bowls is a wonderful thing. No regrets and a new kind of busy in retirement is wonderful.
