Continence – A wee problem and a wee poem!

Every now and again I get the urge to write a poem about something in my life. Today I am going to a talk about continence issues, a subject that many of us may not admit to having. I hope you enjoy this poem.

Continence – A wee problem

There seems to be a problem of which we do not speak
It seems as we grow older, we seem to spring a leak

For those of us with children who bounce on trampolines
We dare not go and join them or we might wet our jeans

And please do not expect us to join you on a run
That sort of exertion will dampen all our fun

And jokes aside, we like a laugh but if it is too hearty
We might let loose a little wee and that could spoil the party

For we must wear protection, to keep us in control
A pad slipped in our knickers is how we have to roll

And then there are the times when we start to sneeze
Yes, there is now a danger for us to let go wees

Yes, if we get a cough when we have caught a cold
The coughing makes it hard, our wees for us to hold

So, no more gee strings we can wear, or skimpy little things
The bigger granny pants we wear for pads with or without wings

Why don’t we talk about it, for it affects so many
If we don’t talk about it, then there’s no help for any

For many of us have problems as we are ageing
For us to get support we have to be engaging

Engaging with our friends and maybe GP too
To realise there are others that suffer just like you

So, you might think this topic is really not too nice
But we must talk about it, or we can’t get advice

It’s not a shameful thing, this problem with our wees
So, seek some help, I ask you would you please

Then hopefully you’ll get advice and be more in control
For keeping this thing secret, might take a heavy toll

So, put your hand up now and ask for some advice
And others may then do the same and that would be quite nice

It would be nice to know that you are not alone
You don’t have to hide, when you have let it known

Yes continence can be a thing of which we do not speak
But look around the room, I bet that others leak!

I am a retired Social Worker having retired in May 2024. I had been a Social Worker for over 20 years and for the sake of my health and wellbeing I chose to retire early. I have some literary projects underway and am enjoying the freedom of no longer working. Working on my projects at my own pace and enjoying my new hobby of lawn bowls is a wonderful thing. No regrets and a new kind of busy in retirement is wonderful.
