I’m getting very competitive!

I am trying very hard to have a balanced approach to my Parkinson’s management. I will admit there are areas where I am not so good and the main one is voice practice. I have tried to combine it with riding my Assault Bike, so that I exercise my voice and my body at the same time. I do wonder what my husband thinks when he hears me, because I am required to make some rather strange noises with some wacky words in the mix. I have put the link below to the Parkinson’s Project if you are interested in having a look.

The other thing that I do every day is lumosity, which is brain training. It is actually quite fun and I try to beat the total from the day before. Most of the time, I succeed, although it may take me five or so attempts. I really should have a swear jar in my study, because I get very annoyed with myself when I don’t do as well as I think I should. I use the free version and you get three games a day for free. You can pay a subscription and have more, but I find that the free games are more than enough.

I recommend going somewhere where you won’t be disturbed (a) for a harmonious home. No-one wants to lose concentration and lose! and (b) so no-one can hear you swearing and chastising yourself and the game.

It is actually quite fun and I look forward to doing it every day.

I have been told on many occasions by Physiotherapists and Gym trainers and others who are involved in exercising, that if you can find something you enjoy that is physical – or in the case of lumosity – mental that stretches you while being fun, you are more likely to continue with it.

I have yet to find a way that the voice training is fun for me, but until I find a more fun option I will have to persevere.

How do others motivate themselves to exercise both their body and mind? I’d love to hear from you. I’m always open to new experiences that will help me with some aspect of my Parkinson’s.

I am a retired Social Worker having retired in May 2024. I had been a Social Worker for over 20 years and for the sake of my health and wellbeing I chose to retire early. I have some literary projects underway and am enjoying the freedom of no longer working. Working on my projects at my own pace and enjoying my new hobby of lawn bowls is a wonderful thing. No regrets and a new kind of busy in retirement is wonderful.
