Time for a check in…

We have been staying in Goathland a beautiful village in the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors. We arrived here on Sunday 4 June and we leave on Sunday 11 June to go visit friends for a few days.

Unfortunately, we started our week in the Yorkshire Moors with a car crash. Luckily I was the only one with any issues and that is only seatbelt bruising. We are so lucky things weren’t worse.

We have managed to mostly put the crash behind us and got on with enjoying our time here. I must admit though that if a car appears suddenly from a side road I am certainly a lot more jumpy than I would normally be!

We had been for a walk in the Moors yesterday and I have tried my best to manage, despite the pain in my injured knee. We are not able to walk as far as we would have previously and I feel a bit bad that because of me we have to somewhat limit our activities. My husband assures me that I am doing well, but I can’t help but be disappointed that I am so limited. The ironic thing is that my Parkies is not causing me physical issues at all. It is all down to my knee injury on my right side, the side that is not affected by my Parkies.

So at the moment the best I can do is to do the walks that we can and rely on pain killers after the fact. Like I say to my husband, “I have pain every day just walking around doing not much of anything! I may as well do something fun or interesting and have pain, rather than something boring and still have pain!”

I am determined to keep doing as much as I can on this holiday. One problem though is that I can’t do most of my Parkies exercises as they involve lunges and other movements that would cause me significant pain. I’m also not sure what to do about my gym membership which is currently on hold. I don’t want to give up going to the gym, but am not sure what it will be safe to do if I return to it.

I have a lot to work out when it comes to addressing my current physical issues, especially in relation to my knee injury. In the interim, I will try not to dwell too much on things I can’t address while on holiday.

I will continue to do what I can physically and try to go easy on myself with the limitations my body currently imposes upon me.

I am a retired Social Worker having retired in May 2024. I had been a Social Worker for over 20 years and for the sake of my health and wellbeing I chose to retire early. I have some literary projects underway and am enjoying the freedom of no longer working. Working on my projects at my own pace and enjoying my new hobby of lawn bowls is a wonderful thing. No regrets and a new kind of busy in retirement is wonderful.

  1. I was sooo sorry to hear about your car accident. I am very glad that it wasn’t too serious and hope that you both bounce back quickly.
Although walking is a lovely part of a holiday (I am a big fan of it myself) I often find that it is the little things that I enjoy and remember. I love shopping in local grocery stores like Waitrose or Carrefour and noting the differences between them and my usual Woolworths, trying new to me products and brands. We enjoy going to local tea shops, getting local cheeses, visiting the charity shops, chatting to strangers. When I reflect on my travel memories, many of them seem to be incidental events rather than the big planned ones. Vive le differences, eh? 😁 In a long winded way, what I am saying is don’t feel too badly if you’re not up to long rambles. A short drive to a little nearby village, a new-to-you tea time treat, a local bacon or meat or deli delight, a short wander around an old church or a chat to a stranger can provide interesting and memorable experiences that bring you pleasure for many years. Sometimes it really is the “little things “.

    1. Thank you Rebecca. You are right, sometimes it is the little things. I also enjoy English charity shops, they often have better things and quality than ours at home. I also love their supermarkets, they have so much in them compared to NZ. We are enjoying catching up with friends and family too.
