Not so cruisey cruising

We are coming to the end of a six day cruise in a narrow boat on the Lancaster canal. It has been a wonderful experience and one we will never forget.

As I have been battling a knee injury for months I wasn’t sure how I would go. I was a bit nervous to be honest. The funny thing I have noticed is that when I am on the boat and going from one end to the other, helping to tie up, catch ropes and tie them off etc, I experience very little pain.

When we leave the boat and go for a walk, I have to rely on a walking stick to deal with the pain. It is almost like my brain knows that my body needs to function to do my bit on the boat. Then when I am “off duty” my brain remembers I should be in pain!

I feel I have done really well with driving the boat. As driving the boat requires a lot of concentration at times I may forget which way to turn the rudder momentarily, but I soon recover and am able to continue.

Both my husband and I find by the end of the day that we are so tired. Too tired to even play cards. We sit and watch a bit of TV and are usually in bed early.

This has definitely been a bucket list holiday and one from which we will take lots of wonderful memories.

What is next on the bucket list I wonder?

I am a retired Social Worker having retired in May 2024. I had been a Social Worker for over 20 years and for the sake of my health and wellbeing I chose to retire early. I have some literary projects underway and am enjoying the freedom of no longer working. Working on my projects at my own pace and enjoying my new hobby of lawn bowls is a wonderful thing. No regrets and a new kind of busy in retirement is wonderful.

  1. Hi pommykiwisue, I have really enjoyed your journey down the canal. I have always wondered what it would be like. The funny thing about pd is that it sneaks up on you when you don’t know when it is going to to raise it’s ugly head. Enjoy the rest of your travels.
