Exercise – do what you can and what you enjoy

There are many different exercise programmes aimed at keeping those of us with Parkinson’s as fit and active as possible for as long as possible. However, for those of us with a complex presentation and a myriad of health issues, it can be somewhat challenging to find a good fit.

For myself, with having had knee surgery, plus a back operation on top of Parkinson’s, it can feel at times like there is nothing that I can do which will help all the issues. At one point before my back became an issue I was going to a circuit class at the local Parkinson’s Society. However, most of the exercises in the circuit I would not be safe to do for my back.

Up until recently, I had a lovely shiny red e-bike I enjoyed getting out and about on. However, I started thinking about risk factors for my back and generally for my body as a whole. All it might take is one fall and I could have more problems with my back or injure myself. As a result I sold my e-bike and will focus on walking with husband and doing Aqua jogging, which I am enjoying.

I also had purchased a static bike to exercise my knee pre-operatively and post-operatively. The surgeon advised this was not a safe exercise option for my back, so that has been sold as well.

My two goals that I am trying to achieve are going on walks with my husband and getting back to being his walking companion and to be able to start back playing bowls in September which is when the new season starts. Medical/Surgical opinion seems to be that this is absolutely achievable.

I was sad to let my e-bike go and to also sell my static bike, but I have to be realistic and not try to do things that I have been advised are not safe for my body and too high a risk.

I will make what I can do count. Hopefully I will fully recover from my latest operation and maybe have a life with some semblance of normality and be much fitter than I am now.

All I can do is try.

I am a retired Social Worker having retired in May 2024. I had been a Social Worker for over 20 years and for the sake of my health and wellbeing I chose to retire early. I have some literary projects underway and am enjoying the freedom of no longer working. Working on my projects at my own pace and enjoying my new hobby of lawn bowls is a wonderful thing. No regrets and a new kind of busy in retirement is wonderful.
