Last night I ordered a product online. I sent the usual order away and anticipated nothing more than perhaps a simple acknowledgement of receipt of my order. I awoke this morning to one of the most delightful emails I have every received.
It certainly is the most delightful response to placing an order for a product that I have ever received. I have taken out the name of the company, but I wanted to share it round, so you too can have a smile on your dial!
I also felt that such an email deserved to be responded to in kind. So, read to the bottom as I respond to their email – which I sent off to them this morning – I hope that I in turn gave them cause to smile.
| All was quiet today until the ………. warehouse intercom crackled to life: “Listen up people! We’ve got a new order for Sue…” …but no one could hear the rest of the announcement over the thunderous roar of applause. Champagne bottles were popped. Tears of joy were shed. ‘Don’t Stop Believin‘ by Journey blared from every speaker. Even Derrick, our Logistics Manager smiled—and Derrick never smiles. Simply put, your order caused pandemonium and everyone at …………… is thrilled to have earned your business. Once we clean up our celebration mess, we’ll be working to get your order packaged, shipped and on its way to you ASAP. Our customer service team will follow up with tracking information as soon as it hits our system. Of course you can always reply to this email at any time to check in for updates. Thank you so much again for choosing ………. If you have any questions, queries simply reply to this email and we’ll respond promptly. |

I just wanted to say how delightful I found your email. I am pleased that I have made such a difference to you and your team. I am heartened in this sometimes-cynical world that joy can be spread to so many by so few… just little old me! I envisage dancing in your offices and hallways to some peppy song. ‘Uptown Funk’ – or something similarly inspiring – for all about to dance and sing springs to mind. I hope that Derrick gets to smile more every day as others follow my lead and buy your wonderful product, for how could it fail to be wonderful when the custodians of its awesomeness spread such joy with the simple sending of an email, such as the one I have just received from you.
The world can be a serious and cynical and dare I say, a sad old place at times. Let’s not become too serious and miss out on the joy that we can give by simply putting a smile on someone’s face as you have done for me this morning.
Every day should be a day for a dose of bubbles, which spread their own special kind of joy. As the bubbles tickle your nose and their joy spreads from your head to your toes. May the celebrations be a daily occurrence and you continue to be the spreader of happiness that your email engenders. May Derrick and any other Derrick’s out there always find a reason to smile, for life is too short to be serious too often. Let there be love, laughter and long life for you all.
You have made my day start with a smile and there can be no greater gift than that.

For my followers old and new and young at heart. I hope in sharing this that it puts a smile on your face. May you always find even the tiniest spark of joy in what can be a serious business in this journey of ours. It may be the smile of a child, a hug from a loved one, a memory held precious from years gone by. It may be a recent memory to add to other precious memories. Let not a day go by without telling someone you love them if you are lucky enough to have them in your lives. For those that you may have loved and lost, may you find a memory of them that puts you in a moment that you shared that brings with it a smile. Even if tinged with sadness, memories are there to give us somewhere to turn to when or if the present does not supply many smiles of its own.
So, bank some memories. Bank some smiles. Give someone in your life a memory, a thought, a moment that they will treasure forever.
In doing so, we will all live on in some way as those we have lost live on in our hearts and minds.
Find a moment – if you can – to bring forth a memory from those you have banked that will make you smile.
