Rehab – now I get it!

After having my operation on Wednesday I have stayed on the Ward for three nights. From the day after surgery I was told to get up and moving. I was also told to try and balance getting my body moving again and taking rests when needed.

My time in hospital has brought that theory into practice. Each time I had to do an exercise I thought about how they too have to work through pain to do rehab. It is not easy. I also experienced my lovely husband wanting to help me get in and out of bed. That’s because he loves me and it must be hard seeing me in pain. I had to tell him I needed to do as much for myself as possible. That is what rehab is all about.

Yesterday I took a walk down the hall of the Ward. It felt like it took forever to get there and back. The thing I noticed was that almost everyone that walked past took the time to encourage me and tell me I was doing well.

You know, having those words of encouragement really did make a difference and spurred me on to try harder.

I know if I encounter someone obviously recovering from an operation I would comment on how well they are walking. Now that I have experienced the value of that encouragement. I will make sure I do it whenever I can.

All along the way I have had nothing but positive reinforcement.

I hope when I return to work that things are manageable for me and it is not too much of a shock to the system.

I am a retired Social Worker having retired in May 2024. I had been a Social Worker for over 20 years and for the sake of my health and wellbeing I chose to retire early. I have some literary projects underway and am enjoying the freedom of no longer working. Working on my projects at my own pace and enjoying my new hobby of lawn bowls is a wonderful thing. No regrets and a new kind of busy in retirement is wonderful.

  1. You are absolutely right about husbands and pain and helping. Occasionally I would be smothering Cheryl and she would tell me so. She does not tell me that anymore. I miss that. Be well, exercise and relax. AND let your husband help once in a while. It will give him purpose. 😎

    1. Thank you for your comment. I always like to hear from people following my Blog. I haven’t been as active as usual while I recover from my operation. I am truly blessed to have such a lovely helpful husband, but I am used to looking after him! He says it’s his turn to look after me while I recover from my operation.
