I had the privilege a couple of days ago to interview for my podcast “Parkies Patter – a chat about all things Parkinson’s” a lovely couple called David and Clare.
David is the person with the condition and has some challenges with his speech, but was able to contribute as and when he was able. We checked in on him regularly, to make sure he was OK with the process. His wife Clare had discussed the interview with him prior to the podcast and he had been in agreement to this proceeding. So, with David’s reduced capacity to vocalise, Clare was the main sharer of their stories. However, both David and Clare agreed that of the two of them Clare was more naturally a talker and David more reticent and not so accustomed to speaking at length about anything.
We have done a recording on my podcast “Parkies Patter – a chat about all things Parkinsons” and because it was quite long, I have separated the recording into two parts. They are both very good and I appreciated their input and the insight into their lives since diagnosis.
It was heartening to hear that David’s employer was very supportive of him and that they were very active in ensuring David was safe in the work environment and also that he had any support he might need to remain at work longer. Unfortunately, it seems it wasn’t long before he had to make the big decision of retiring. He and Clare continue together and seem to mainly manage the situation independently, but I have discussed with them ways of accessing help in the future. I am able to do this due to my background as a Social Worker of over 20+ years, although I am no longer practicing. I am also very careful about the type of information I provide and also emphasise that I am no longer a Registered Social Worker.
The interviews I have done with David and Clare have been great and well worth a listen. I have provided access to the interviews below.
