Multi-tasking and making memories…

A couple of days into our canal boat holiday and I am reflecting on how things are going.

I have taken the risk – or maybe my husband has – of trying my hand at driving the boat from time to time. It is quite challenging in many ways. Using the tiller to steer is quite counter intuitive. The boat sort of pivots from the middle and you push the tiller the opposite way to where you intend to go. It is an exercise in concentration and really quite tiring. However, because it is a bit of a mental effort, I’m sure it’s good for my brain.

It is lovely to pootle away along the canal with beautiful scenery. At one point I became quite overwhelmed by the scenery and the feeling of how fortunate I am to be able to share this precious experience with my husband. I am so lucky to be able to have a trip like this and it really is a ‘bucket list’ trip. Not that I intend kicking one any time soon!

This really is a special time in our lives as we make precious memories together. A balance of time alone together as a couple and time spent with family and friends.

Now is the time to make the best of life and it certainly feels like life is pretty good at the moment.

I can say that I am feeling content at the moment.

I am a retired Social Worker having retired in May 2024. I had been a Social Worker for over 20 years and for the sake of my health and wellbeing I chose to retire early. I have some literary projects underway and am enjoying the freedom of no longer working. Working on my projects at my own pace and enjoying my new hobby of lawn bowls is a wonderful thing. No regrets and a new kind of busy in retirement is wonderful.

  1. Reading this early on a chilly Southern Hemisphere morning. It made me smile and brightened my day. Fantastic to hear that you are enjoying the experience. Long may the feeling of contentment continue! Best wishes to you both.
