A stile with style…

So today we went to see my sister in-law’s farm in Derbyshire. It is set in lovely English countryside.

We decided to go for a bit of a walk around the farm as it’s the first time we had been there. As stated in previous posts I have had a lot of trouble with my right knee, so I was a bit unsure of how I would go.

One of the things we had to do was climb over a couple of stiles. It brought back a memory of just prior to my diagnosis. We had gone for a walk in the country to a walk we have done several times. We came to a stile and to my surprise, I really struggled to be able to get myself up on the first step of the stile. This had surprised me as I had never had any trouble previously. Coupled with some other symptoms, I had a strong feeling that I needed to see my doctor and ask to be referred to a Neurologist. That next week I saw my GP and – somewhat reluctantly – was referred to my chosen Neurologist. Things moved quickly from there and soon after I was diagnosed.

So walking today, when I came to the stile I had a moment of doubt that I would be able to get over. Because of my recent lack of exercise and the weakness in my right knee I was naturally a bit apprehensive.

It was a bit of an effort to haul myself up and over. Getting myself onto the first step was quite an effort but I managed to do it. I have also had trouble bending my right knee or lifting my leg, but today I’m pleased to say that I managed to lift my right leg over the stile. It was certainly a bit more difficult than it was in the past but I’m pleased to say I did it.

Another factor was the fact that I had not had my midday meds. While I am often late in taking them with little perceived effect, I think perhaps it might have helped me in getting over that stile.

Lessons learned today.

1. Make a note of when I start to tire, so I know what I will manage and be safe and able to get back.

2. Ensure I have my meds before doing any extended exercise so I am able to function at a level that I need to for walking/tramping safely.

3. Try to do what I can and push myself to do things that might stretch me on this holiday.

4. If I’ve overdone it a bit, there’s always painkillers.

So, I’m pleased to say I managed the stile with style. Not everyone’s idea of style, but I’m pleased with what I was able to manage.

I am a retired Social Worker having retired in May 2024. I had been a Social Worker for over 20 years and for the sake of my health and wellbeing I chose to retire early. I have some literary projects underway and am enjoying the freedom of no longer working. Working on my projects at my own pace and enjoying my new hobby of lawn bowls is a wonderful thing. No regrets and a new kind of busy in retirement is wonderful.
