Dental Disaster – A poem

I have often said that if I am to hurt myself in any way, it will be doing something stupid! Shortly after moving in this house I got up on a bunk ladder to make the top bunk. All was going well, until I was ready to get down. I started off OK, but then went to step on a rung that wasn’t there and fell down hard on the floor. Luckily I didn’t break anything, but I am still banned from using any ladders, be they step, bunk or builder’s ladder!

I was listening to a French stand-up comedian Marcel Lucont and he had two very funny pieces of poetry called “Wine in a can” and “Idiots”. They were very funny and for some reason the one called “Idiots” made me think of some of the stupid things I’ve done over the years.

So, I thought I would try to capture one idiotic moment in my life that happened when I was about 12.

Dental Disaster

One day like any other day
my common sense would go astray

I don’t know why I did this thing
Or what problems it would bring

a pencil down my best friends shirt
the point dug in it must have hurt

Would not have done too much harm
If she’d not had a broken arm!

And when it dug into her back
Her arm shot out, I heard a crack

Because her arm was in a plaster
It became a dental disaster

I was down on hands and knees
looking for my poor tooth piece

The teacher said ‘what did you do?”
The tooth won’t mend with any glue

Off to the office I had to come
Where I was to meet my Mum

Mum turned up and impressed
Her daughter was a bloody pest

Of all the silly things to do
“It wasn’t clever was it Sue?”

I was a childish teenage youth
Found myself with one less tooth

Off to the dentist, a friendly chap
Who said that they could fill the gap

One thing he said you cannot grapple
Don’t bite into a toffee apple

A warning here,”cos if you do...”
You’ll see your tooth look back at you

We left the dentist fairly happy
At least I wasn’t to be gappy

So never a pencil or a pen
Will I ever poke again

Quickly dashed off this morning, so a bit rough around the edges, but I still remember the shock of being hit full tilt in the mouth by my friend’s broken arm. I also remember crawling round in a daze trying to find the bit of my tooth. I think I may have been slightly concussed!

So, if I do silly things now, it may be my Parkinson’s brain not functioning at 100% or it could just mean that sometimes I am just prone to doing idiotic things!

I am a retired Social Worker having retired in May 2024. I had been a Social Worker for over 20 years and for the sake of my health and wellbeing I chose to retire early. I have some literary projects underway and am enjoying the freedom of no longer working. Working on my projects at my own pace and enjoying my new hobby of lawn bowls is a wonderful thing. No regrets and a new kind of busy in retirement is wonderful.
