Speech Language Therapy and Parkinson’s – An interview

I had the privilege of interviewing Kirstie, a Speech Language Therapist that I had worked with as a colleague and also benefitted by her expertise as a patient. ‘Speechies’ as they are affectionately referred to by those of us that work or worked on the ward, do incredible work with patients. They truly can make a big difference.

I encourage you to listen to the interview as she has a wealth of knowledge and is an interesting speaker. At times in the interview – and especially towards the end – you will notice that there is a bit of a wobble in my voice as my emotions came to the fore. I had said to Kirstie that I should edit out those pieces of the interview, however, she encouraged me to leave them in as they are an honest indication of my feelings at the time. So, the ‘wobble’ stayed in! I think by the end of the interview we both were a bit misty and this may be in part because we know each other from working together.

Despite a few teary moments – and maybe because she helped me feel safe to put my raw feelings out there – it shows that even in sharing my wobbly moments, I can remain true to myself.

Sharing my truth in an honest way has always been part of my philosophy in doing this blog and now my podcast.

I hope you enjoy this interview.

I am a retired Social Worker having retired in May 2024. I had been a Social Worker for over 20 years and for the sake of my health and wellbeing I chose to retire early. I have some literary projects underway and am enjoying the freedom of no longer working. Working on my projects at my own pace and enjoying my new hobby of lawn bowls is a wonderful thing. No regrets and a new kind of busy in retirement is wonderful.
