Waiting at the ‘After Hours’

I had to take my husband into the 24 hour surgery – ‘After Hours’ – as he had some chest pains that needed checking out. All is well, but worth checking. Five hours later we were free to go home. A long wait and very boring, so I wrote this poem to help while away the time. I’ve done a wee podcast as well, if you’d like to hear it.

Waiting at the ‘After Hours’

Waiting at the After Hours with the hurt and sick
It’s a place that we all know, you’re never seen too quick

Waiting at the After Hours, you might be surprised to learn
This time it is not for me, for it’s the hubby’s turn

Waiting at the After Hours, to see if we can go
Have the test results come in, we’d really like to know.

Waiting at the After Hours, I know that they are busy
Waiting for the test results, to know then just how is he?

Waiting at the After Hours, among the waiting bunch
Eating snacks from a machine, we didn’t have our lunch

Waiting at the After Hours the waiting is the worst
But we know the drill by now, for this is not our first

Waiting at the After Hours, we think we’ve been forgotten
Our doctors gone and left for home, now that is really rotten

Waiting at the After Hours, we’ve really had enough
The Doc forgot to hand us on, for us then it’s just tough

Waiting at the After Hours, as in and out staff roam
And telling other patients that they can go on home

Waiting at the After Hours, the Doctor has now been
We two have stayed the longest of all that we have seen

Waiting at the After Hours, we’re finally good to go
The hubby’s tests are all OK and that is good to know

I am a retired Social Worker having retired in May 2024. I had been a Social Worker for over 20 years and for the sake of my health and wellbeing I chose to retire early. I have some literary projects underway and am enjoying the freedom of no longer working. Working on my projects at my own pace and enjoying my new hobby of lawn bowls is a wonderful thing. No regrets and a new kind of busy in retirement is wonderful.

    1. Thanks. Writing this poem kept me amused for at least five minutes of the five hours we were there! Glad you enjoy the poems. Hubby is OK, but needed to be checked out to make sure. It’s usually me, that brings us to the After Hours or the hospital! Guess he had to have a turn sometime!
