Being Social…

Every now and again I find myself reviewing how life is going and why. This is one of those times. We have had an eventful four years – come 15/12/24 – and lots of positive things happening. One of the most positive things is moving to North Canterbury and buying our lovely house here. There have been so many positives since moving and it would be hard to find any negative things as a result of the move. So, I count my blessings as I review my/our life.

Since moving I/we have:

  • Moved into a beautiful home that we transformed totally before we moved in. It is the most modern home we have ever owned and we were fortunate to be able to pay tradesmen/women/people to do all the work and didn’t move in till it was all done and dusted.
  • New neighbours that have become good friends, that we socialise with. We know we literally have on our doorstep help if it is needed.
  • Made up a quiz team with the neighbours, great mental stimulation and socialisation.
  • Started volunteering at a local Op Shop and enjoying the simplicity of it compared to working in my previous role.
  • Started playing bowls and doing well and really enjoying it.
  • Working on my book for young children whose Father has had a stroke. Due to be ready for release in the next few months.
  • Have finally been able to get an appointment to see my specialist. The first time since diagnosis. That will happen in about two weeks.

So, all in all a really positive life change when we moved house. I can certainly recommend making the change earler in the journey with Parkinson’s rather than later. I would not have been able to be an active participant if we had moved later. Also, I have joined the bowling club early, so that I can get the basics of the game sorted before any physical changes occur that might mean I have to adjust my game. I have been delighted with how welcoming the club members have been and feel really supported.

All in all, life is good.

Long may it continue.

I am a retired Social Worker having retired in May 2024. I had been a Social Worker for over 20 years and for the sake of my health and wellbeing I chose to retire early. I have some literary projects underway and am enjoying the freedom of no longer working. Working on my projects at my own pace and enjoying my new hobby of lawn bowls is a wonderful thing. No regrets and a new kind of busy in retirement is wonderful.
