Everything and everyone is getting old in our house…

Just when you think all is going smoothly – well relatively for those of us with a ‘Murphy’s Law’ or in our household ‘Ade and Sue’s Law’ – life throws a few curve balls that throw you out of kilter.

Firstly, the appliances. Both our coffee machine and our toaster decided to stop working. The toaster rather dramatically spat a few sparks out at me as I was trying to make my toast the other day. Wasn’t going near that beast after that!

The second – which had been playing up for a while – just stopped working properly so that needed replacing too. Thank goodness for some backpay, we went and bought two new shiny appliances and those are now in our kitchen.

Then there’s me of course. Just when I thought I had been progressing well with the knee, I overdid the getting back into exercise thing and ended up making my knee swollen and sore. So, I’ve had to cut back on the exercise, so that I can function at work.

Finally, there is our ageing cat Gidget. Took her for her annual check-up vaccinations and flea and worm treatment. She has lost weight and I had noticed she seemed to be particularly thirsty recently. Vet did a blood test on her and phoned us with the verdict. Long story short she has an over-active thyroid so needs either daily medications – a two person job, so not an option – or a cream to rub in her ears daily. Both things she would absolutely hate us for. The final option is to try a special diet, which is of course expensive. We are going to try the food option and see how she goes.

All of this expense comes hot on the heels of my resignation and my final day of work will be 9/5/24. Walking away from a well-paying job to early retirement, with my Kiwisaver and maybe some sort of financial support from the government, if I am lucky and qualify. We find out next week.

So, right when we are trying to make economies, so that things don’t get too tight these things come to try us!

If adversity builds character, I must be absolutely full of character right now!

I am absolutely convinced that the right thing to do for me and for my husband is to retire. However, we could do without incurring extra costs right now!

I am a retired Social Worker having retired in May 2024. I had been a Social Worker for over 20 years and for the sake of my health and wellbeing I chose to retire early. I have some literary projects underway and am enjoying the freedom of no longer working. Working on my projects at my own pace and enjoying my new hobby of lawn bowls is a wonderful thing. No regrets and a new kind of busy in retirement is wonderful.
