A poem about bowls

Bowling

Bowling some say is a game for the aged
The elders, retired, the no longer waged

But I have been trying my hand at the game
And let me just tell you, it’s kind of a shame

That those who have said, haven’t given a go
For they would then get, what I now know

It can be quite tiring to walk up and down
I have to go home and have a lie down

There’s many a trip, up then down on the green
The bowls shining bright, many colours I’ve seen

There’s Henselite, Taylor and don’t forget Aero
When you get the shot, you’ll be hailed a hero

And as you are standing and waiting your turn
You’ll get some great tips to help you to learn

The Skip is the one that stands at the head
We try very hard to do what they’ve said

But sometimes it’s hard to hear what they say
So, give a thumbs up and give your best play

I look round the green and see many smiles
All ages and stages, all different styles

A day on the green, will be filled with much laughter
Topped off with some wine, or beer or juice after

So as a club newbie, I’d just like to say
I’ve felt so accepted right from the first day

I’ve told all my friends and my family too
Bowls is a game that they all ought to do

As I walk along and play several ends
I feel I have met a bunch of new friends.

I am a retired Social Worker having retired in May 2024. I had been a Social Worker for over 20 years and for the sake of my health and wellbeing I chose to retire early. I have some literary projects underway and am enjoying the freedom of no longer working. Working on my projects at my own pace and enjoying my new hobby of lawn bowls is a wonderful thing. No regrets and a new kind of busy in retirement is wonderful.
