There’s nothing like a long holiday …..

After a long time planning and several weeks on holiday in the UK we head towards the end of our great adventure. In total once we return to New Zealand we will have been on holiday for 9 weeks. The longest holiday we have ever had together. Soon we will be home and in no time at all, this trip will become a distant memory as we get back to our usual lives and jobs.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the holiday and I’m sure my husband has too. It has been a mix of time spent with family and friends and time spent as a couple. We have loved both aspects. There have been physical challenges for me – mostly due to my injured knee – but we have made the best of what we can do. Painkillers have certainly been well utilised.

We will be catching up with some English Cousins of my husband’s tomorrow together with his sister – who we are staying with currently – and look forward to a catch-up and a meal in an English Pub. What could be better! It will be lovely to catch up with more family and we both feel that we have enjoyed reconnecting with both family and good friends along the way.

This Friday we say goodbye to my sister-in-law and brother-in-law and head to London for three days. We will be seeing a couple of shows – ‘The Mousetrap’ and ‘Matilda’ – we will no doubt do some other tourist things, but no firm plans for the daytime as yet. So, it will be yet another strange bed in a hotel and then onto a plane bound for Singapore and ultimately home to Kaiapoi, Waimakariri – North Canterbury – to our lovely home.

Like I said in my title ‘There’s nothing like a long holiday….’ I would add ‘to make you appreciate home’. We have loved our trip, it’s true, but I am feeling more than ready to return to our lives at home. To sleep in our own bed, to see our cat Gidget – who has probably disowned us now, for the love of my cousin – and to settle back into our lives. We have both needed the break and were well and truly in need of a decent holiday by the time it came to leave for the UK.

The UK weather has been kind to us, with lots of sunshine. I had joked with workmates who said that I might come back with a tan ‘this is the UK we’re talking about!’ But I may need to eat my words, as we have been walking round in shorts and t-shirts predominantly and may actually have a bit of a tan going on after all!

We have both absolutely loved our trip, but I for one am starting to miss our lovely home and am ready to return.

I am a retired Social Worker having retired in May 2024. I had been a Social Worker for over 20 years and for the sake of my health and wellbeing I chose to retire early. I have some literary projects underway and am enjoying the freedom of no longer working. Working on my projects at my own pace and enjoying my new hobby of lawn bowls is a wonderful thing. No regrets and a new kind of busy in retirement is wonderful.
