I am now in the third week of exercises where I get up early each morning and do my set exercises and every afternoon work with my physiotherapist. It is a commitment, but I think it will be worth it in the long run!
Today, I noticed something amazing! I have been consciously telling myself all weekend to remember to swing my left arm – my Parkies arm – as it has had markedly decreased it’s swing over the last few months. Well, today I found myself walking down the ward this afternoon and for the first time in months, I noticed it was swinging all by itself, like a ‘normal’ person!!
I can’t describe how happy and excited I was at what many may think is such a small thing. But, for me, it feels like – even just a little bit – I am giving Parkies a run for it’s money, winning a little victory and reclaiming my body.
My physio was delighted when I told him and said it shows that the exercises are working and that my brain is retraining.
So, the hard work I’m putting in looks like paying dividends. I would certainly recommend anyone that has Parkies to work with a physio specialising in working with Neurological disorders. Never pass up the opportunity to fight this thing and win those little victories. Like a current TV ad says, ‘Little can be huge!’
