Grandchildren are a gift

Recently I have been enjoying spending some one-on-one time with each of my three granddaughters. It has been lovely having that individual time to talk to them about how things are going for them and opening the door for them if they want to talk. There have been some significant changes in their family structure and so, they have had a lot of adjustments to make.

It is my job as a grandparent to support them and offer a welcoming home, a pair of arms to wrap round them and a listening ear should they need to talk. I will always endeavour to be there for them when they need me.

I recorded a podcast about my grandies and what they mean to me.

Here’s a poem I wrote for them before they were born (twins).

You haven't been born yet. Don't know who you'll be.
Who'll ask for a story and climb on a knee.

I know you'll have laughter. I know you'll have tears.
A family who'll love you all through the years.

At the end of the day when a story is read
you'll be snuggled up warmly and tucked up in bed

maybe stories of dragons, princesses, or kings,
and all sorts of wonderful magical things.

Then someone who loves you will kiss you goodnight
and drifting to sleep. Your dreams will take flight.

I know when I heard that you were to be
a wonderful dream came true for me.

and another poem for them...

This is the Christmas before you arrived.
As inside your mommy, you grew and you thrived

and mummy and daddy, Lauren and James
were lovingly waiting and thinking up names.

I gave you this book to have and to share
while counting the days until you were here.

I am a retired Social Worker having retired in May 2024. I had been a Social Worker for over 20 years and for the sake of my health and wellbeing I chose to retire early. I have some literary projects underway and am enjoying the freedom of no longer working. Working on my projects at my own pace and enjoying my new hobby of lawn bowls is a wonderful thing. No regrets and a new kind of busy in retirement is wonderful.
