Ade and Sue’s Law… worse than Murphy’s!

Most of us will be familiar with Murphy’s Law. Where anything that can go wrong will go wrong. As a couple we have “Ade and Sue’s Law” where often things have not gone according to plan, even when – we thought – nothing could do so!

Today is our 15th Wedding Anniversary and we are still on the beautiful island of Rarotonga. We have booked a nice dinner in the restaurant next to our accommodation and have been looking forward to it. Tomorrow, we are due to fly home, but there may be issues that prevent that.

While we have been here there have been some cloudy days, but nothing really of note that put a damper on things. We have snorkelled twice and hoped to have a final ‘snork’ today, but the weather has certainly turned from at least some sunshine to grey skies and high winds. Winds are reaching 50kph at worst and with us due to fly out tomorrow, we felt it unlikely that the planes could land or take off in such high winds. Even if they do, it would not be a pleasant experience!

So, all day we have been keeping an eye on the flight radar to see if planes have been able to land. It may be that the winds get even fiercer overnight, but it is hard to tell as weather can be unpredictable as we all know. So, with us due to fly home tomorrow and three days of 50kph+ winds, we decided to have a ‘Plan B’ in case the plane is unable to fly us home. With maybe 200-300 passengers on the flight and a limited amount of accommodation likely to be available, we thought it wise as our “Plan B” to book a Hotel for two nights starting tomorrow night. So, that’s what we did. The last thing we wanted to have to face at the end of our holiday is a mad scrabble for a roof over our heads if the plane couldn’t get us out. Unfortunately, the booking is non-refundable, so if we do fly out tomorrow as originally booked, then we lose the cost of two night’s accommodation.

We had lots of discussion about what would be best to do and both decided to book another couple of days accommodation in case it was needed. Given we have an “Ade and Sue’s Law” life where if something can go wrong it usually does a good job of it, we felt this was the wisest course of action.

So, if we fly out tomorrow, all well and good. Given my new tendency towards anxiety, it is probably best that we don’t have too much anxiety about whether we fly or not and that we have our bases covered. If we go, no harm done, but if there is a last minute cancellation then we will at least have a bed for a night or two. I would be very concerned if 200-300 other passengers were vying for emergency accommodation and we couldn’t find anywhere to stay.

Tonight though, we look forward to a lovely dinner tonight to celebrate 15 years of marriage. Currently, just resting, reading and watching the weather from the safety of our beach front unit. All going well we will be home tomorrow night.

Let’s hope “Ade and Sue’s Law” doesn’t throw any curve balls our way!

I have some literary projects underway and am enjoying the freedom of no longer working. Working on my projects at my own pace and enjoying my new hobby of lawn bowls is a wonderful thing. No regrets and a new kind of busy in retirement is wonderful.
