What makes an occasion special?

When asked if we were going to dinner for a special occasion, it got me thinking about what makes an occasion special. For me, the answer is always spending time with people I love. I also always say that I don’t remember any of the gifts I received for birthdays or Christmas over the years as a child, but I remember time spent with those I loved. I remember picnics and bush walks and sandcastle making at the beach. Burying, my Dad in sand and him going to sleep. Beach cricket and bowls and playing games in albums on cold and rainy days, in front of a roaring fire with cocoa and home baking.

Here is a podcast about some of the things that stay in my memory as shared with those I love.

I am a retired Social Worker having retired in May 2024. I had been a Social Worker for over 20 years and for the sake of my health and wellbeing I chose to retire early. I have some literary projects underway and am enjoying the freedom of no longer working. Working on my projects at my own pace and enjoying my new hobby of lawn bowls is a wonderful thing. No regrets and a new kind of busy in retirement is wonderful.
