Warm knees and Warm memories

Just over four months ago I started a project to crochet knee rugs for one of the local resthomes. They are just the right size to cover knees and laps when sitting in a chair or wheelchair and won’t get in the way of wheels.

I started doing them because I wanted something to do that would keep me occupied when I had to sit and rest my knee following my surgery. I had done some for my three grandsons when I had my shoulder operation a few years ago. I thought I would take it up again with the latest operation and my elderly Aunt suggested that the local resthome might like them. So, I started making them and have probably made about 10 so far.

It has proven to be quite therapeutic and, in a way, quite addictive. I can’t just sit in my chair and watch TV anymore; I have to sit and crochet rugs. Below are a couple of examples.

I was talking to someone today about my latest project and she said that the older residents would probably appreciate them for many reasons. Not only will they help to keep them warm, but they may bring back memories of when they or their mothers would make them. Another thing that I hope that they bring to those receiving them is that they add a splash of colour. Even if just draped over their chair, in an often impersonal and bland environment they bring brightness and I hope some joy.

I was lucky to be gifted a lot of free wool from people in my community, so I don’t have to worry about cost and can make many, many more before I run out of wool. It makes me happy to think they might be appreciated and perhaps even treasured by those that receive them.

One day, I might need to make one for myself!

I am a retired Social Worker having retired in May 2024. I had been a Social Worker for over 20 years and for the sake of my health and wellbeing I chose to retire early. I have some literary projects underway and am enjoying the freedom of no longer working. Working on my projects at my own pace and enjoying my new hobby of lawn bowls is a wonderful thing. No regrets and a new kind of busy in retirement is wonderful.
