What is more important. The support act or the main event?

My husband and I are right now at ‘The Corrs’ concert on a beautiful Summers evening. In between support acts and waiting for the ‘main event’.

It got me thinking. What is more important? The support acts or the main event? Some would say the main event, all day long! But I am not so sure. Where would the Corrs be if they didn’t have the support acts? Would their fans expect them to perform for 3 hours and is that realistic? The support acts get the crowd warmed up and provide a variety of entertainment. Some of the support acts might be able to attract a decent crowd at any gig. But for some this is a golden opportunity to build on their fan base if they have one.

It is the same with working in a team environment. Every team member from cleaners to consultants play a vital role. None could function without the others in the team.

So too, for someone with Parkies. We – as those with the diagnosis – may be ‘the main event’ but without the support acts in our lives we would struggle to get through this gig that is Parkinson’s. Everyone in our circle of care, or our family system or work crew is a member of our support team.

We may be the ‘main events’ but without our ‘support acts’ life would not be as rich and as full as it can. Each of us plays our part in getting through life’s challenges.

The gig that is a life with Parkinson’s takes all of us to get through.

I am a retired Social Worker having retired in May 2024. I had been a Social Worker for over 20 years and for the sake of my health and wellbeing I chose to retire early. I have some literary projects underway and am enjoying the freedom of no longer working. Working on my projects at my own pace and enjoying my new hobby of lawn bowls is a wonderful thing. No regrets and a new kind of busy in retirement is wonderful.
