I have had my moments in the last few weeks or so, where I have very much been focussed on my knee and my pain and whether I will get the operation I need soon. However, there is one thing that makes me happy and that is writing poetry. Reading through some of my poetry today puts a smile on my face.
I love it when a poem comes together, and I can express myself through verse. I wrote two poems for a colleague who retired this week and was privileged to open the speeches and close the speeches with my poems at her farewell. She was very happy with the poems and said she will treasure them as a gift I have given her. It was challenging to read them to her as we were all a bit emotional. Saying goodbye to a colleague we value and that we will miss is never easy.
But if I have given her a gift that she will keep and reflect upon and that maybe will give her happiness then I have done my job well.
I have written several poems lately. Some for people I work with, some on other things that inspire me. Writing poetry definitely brings me to my happy place. Writing poetry and this Blog give me a great sense of satisfaction that through the use of verse I can express myself and move people to laughter and sometimes to tears. Words have that power and I am blessed to have that power within my grasp to move people with my words.
Perhaps the next time my thoughts go in directions that bring me down, I should read or write some poetry and go to my happy place.
