A poem about a special kind of grief

I met with someone today who is helping me get a project together in writing a book for children. She does some amazing work in helping people deal with the grief of miscarriages, infertility, stillbirth and other under-recognised events that cause people grief. Often people around them are not aware of their grief. She knows that I write poetry and asked if I have ever written a poem about grief. So, I decided to write one about the grief of losing a child. I have shared it with her and hopefully it can be shared with people who are experiencing this.

Life is not all about Parkinson’s. There are others having a difficult time in many ways in their lives and those around them may not be aware.

Grief for a lost child

What is grief, how does it feel
If no-one knows, is it less real?

For months you carry a baby inside
Your growing bump a sense of pride

As you prepare your baby’s room
They’re nestled safely in your womb

But somewhere though along the way
You learn your baby cannot stay

Can those around you know the grief?
The pain you feel beyond belief

The dreams you had, the life you’d planned
With cherished child to hold your hand

Was not to be the dreams all shattered
Some soon forget how much they mattered

Will they forget, that from the start
Your child lived within your heart

And though they never got to grow
Your love for them will never go

And if you have another child
Your loss is never reconciled

The child that you had loved and lost
Your heart, your soul will pay the cost

They’ll always stay within your heart
Just as they did right from the start

I am a retired Social Worker having retired in May 2024. I had been a Social Worker for over 20 years and for the sake of my health and wellbeing I chose to retire early. I have some literary projects underway and am enjoying the freedom of no longer working. Working on my projects at my own pace and enjoying my new hobby of lawn bowls is a wonderful thing. No regrets and a new kind of busy in retirement is wonderful.
