I found this recommended on a Facebook Page I am a member of. The page itself is one you have to join as a member and it has contributors from both a caring perspective and also from that of a person with Parkinson’s. It is a very positive group and there is a lot of sharing of good information and also some fun posts encouraging us to contribute. For example ‘Talent Tuesday’ where we are encouraged to put out there some of the creative things we are doing. Check it out, it’s well worth tapping into this as a resource. Look up on Facebook the following ‘AUST & NZ PARKINSON’S SUPPORT AND CHAT‘ and see what they have to offer.
Anyway, back to the link above. This is over an hour long, but I watched it in a few smaller bites and took some notes. Some interesting stuff here.
Things I took from it, that maybe I sort of knew before, but some extra stuff I didn’t realise. It turned a number of things I thought I knew on it’s head, here’s a few points I picked out:
- The more Dairy you consume, the higher the chance of getting Parkinson’s in the first place.
- Women have a slower progession of PD than men.
- Tinnitus and Parkinson’s often go together. Magnesium and B12 are useful for reducing symptoms in Tinnitus.
- Limit consumption of protein to evenings as protein can adversely affect the intake of Levidopa.
- The MIND diet is recommended in preference to the Mediterranean Diet.
- Red Wine is good. Yay!
- Genko is shown to have a significant positive impact on Parkinson’s and Dementia and is a beneficial memory aid.
- Avoid as much as possible…. Yoghurt, milk, cream, drinking out of plastic, butter, chicken, pork, cheese, frozen veges, beef, canned vergetables, fried food, icecream, soda and canned fruit. Phew, that’s quite an exhaustive list.
- Have lots of … Fresh vegetables, non-fried seafood, nuts and seeds, fresh fruit, coconut oil.
- Intermittent fasting is recommended for Parkinson’s. At least a 12 hour gap between your last meal in the evening till you eat again the next day.
I won’t go into this information too much more. I highly recommend that you check out this video. It has a lot of interesting information and well worth a view.
Hi Sue.
I saw this video a few weeks ago on No Silver Bullet for PD. It was really interesting. I’m not quite sure what to make of the no frozen vegetables and no dairy products. What do you think?
I drink kefir because I was told that it was important in PD to have a healthy gut biome. I am going to bring it up with my neurologist and see what he has to say. I’m also going to ask him about supplements. Many people recommend B1and B12 etc. I’m no expert, so I’d like to hear from others who are specialists in the field. There’s so much contradictory information about, my layperson’s brain would love it if the experts could come to some consensus, as theyhave about exercise.
Have you settled back into your normal routine? I’m very impressed that you’ve been able to go back to work so quickly. I get jet lag and usually need a few days to recover.

Hi Rebecca. Thanks, I am quite impressed I managed a full week myself! I have a theory that my body being used to lack of sleep adjusted better to the change in time zones because of it. I thought the presentation was very well done and thought provoking. I went out and bought some Magnesium, B12 and Ginko to try. I’m sure it won’t do any harm to give it a go. Not sure about the frozen veges and why that should be an issue. I am going to try to abstain from protein during the day and leave till the evening. Also, eat more fish. Not sure that I agree with giving up chicken perhaps reducing the amount would be beneficial? Yes, no dairy could also be an issue. So many theories and different types of advice!
