Medications and sickness

The last few days have been difficult ones as I unfortunately managed to get some kind of stomach bug. I have had three days of changing symptoms, all of which seemed like classic COVID symptoms. However, I have tested myself 3 x and have been clear.

So the first day, I just felt really rotten and was coughing all day and through the night and hardly slept at all. Then the next day I started being unable to keep any food or even water down. I tried eating a banana at one stage, but that didn’t work, so couldn’t even manage a piece of fruit.

The thing is, I need to take my medications 3 x daily and although I’m not sure it says to take with food, I have always tried to take at or near mealtimes. With not being able to keep food down, this presented me with a dilemma. Should I leave my medications for the day, if they weren’t going to stay put – as it were – or should I take them with a minimum of water and cross fingers and hope for the best? I decided to do the latter. Every time I took my tablets, I was very sick afterwards. I remained unable to keep any food or water down for the whole day. I just hope the tablets were able to be of some benefit.

In the night I woke up and my stomach felt a little better, so I got up and had a banana and lemonade. The banana didn’t give me any problems thank goodness, but the lemonade felt like it was burning my throat, which is probably raw from being sick several times yesterday.

This morning I managed some toast and half a cup of tea. I was able to take my meds without any issues and can now keep things down. However, today I am still very fatigued and thankful that I have three days till I go back to work.

At least today, I am hopeful that I will get the full benefit of my medications. I am concerned though that if I were further on in my Parkies journey that this could be an issue. I suppose taking them and hoping that at least some of the medications get into my system is the only way to go.

I am a retired Social Worker having retired in May 2024. I had been a Social Worker for over 20 years and for the sake of my health and wellbeing I chose to retire early. I have some literary projects underway and am enjoying the freedom of no longer working. Working on my projects at my own pace and enjoying my new hobby of lawn bowls is a wonderful thing. No regrets and a new kind of busy in retirement is wonderful.

  1. I’m on Madopar three times a day and my neurologist told me not to eat any protein for half an hour before and one and a half hours after. Apparently protein can interfere with the absorption. I always take mine without food. Hope that you are feeling a lot better very soon. 🙂

    1. Hi Rebecca. I haven’t been told by my specialist not to eat anything in particular. He also said the exact timing of my meds is not crucial as long as three times daily. I usually make that breakfast, lunch and dinner. I’m still feeling a bit rough, hopefully in a day or two I’ll be OK to return to work.
