Continence and other joys – A poem about ageing

There are many joys in growing old and many not so much
There doesn’t seem a body part that doesn’t hurt to touch

There is skin that’s not so stretchy, it separates in folds
The saggy bod and saggy boobs, sure show that we are old

There’s eyes that do not shine as bright, as they did in our youth
And for some of us, there’s dentures and not a single tooth

There’s ears that now don’t hear so good, no matter how we try
And things go on around us, we don’t know how or why

There’s entertainment round us, full volume on the telly
And showering can be difficult, but don’t want to be smelly

There’s time to spend with family, their company we seek
But laughing can be risky, especially if you leak!

But saggy, baggy, old and weary, toothless and unseen
Respect the older person for all that they have been

I am a retired Social Worker having retired in May 2024. I had been a Social Worker for over 20 years and for the sake of my health and wellbeing I chose to retire early. I have some literary projects underway and am enjoying the freedom of no longer working. Working on my projects at my own pace and enjoying my new hobby of lawn bowls is a wonderful thing. No regrets and a new kind of busy in retirement is wonderful.
