An older person is a person too – A poem about ageing

You see an older person, so wrinkled and so slow
But they are still a person, we’re lucky we can know

The picture that we have of us and how we cope so well
Can sometimes have a different view, we hear our children tell

No longer in the flush of youth, we’ve memories to share
Of lives we’ve lived and time we’ve spent before we all came here

The children that we raised, we hope we’ve done it well
The way they treat the elderly, is one way you can tell

We taught them all to honour age and treat it with respect
And think of how an unkind word can have a bad effect

For though we sit here wrinkled and leaning on a cane
We still have value in this world as long as we remain

For just because we’re older does not reduce our worth
The lives that we have lived so many since our birth

Inside our minds and in our hearts we still have hopes and dreams
We may not have the words to say, or that is how it seems

For all those elders in your lives, must treat them as a treasure
Those waning years we must ensure that they are filled with pleasure

I am a retired Social Worker having retired in May 2024. I had been a Social Worker for over 20 years and for the sake of my health and wellbeing I chose to retire early. I have some literary projects underway and am enjoying the freedom of no longer working. Working on my projects at my own pace and enjoying my new hobby of lawn bowls is a wonderful thing. No regrets and a new kind of busy in retirement is wonderful.
