A tick off the bucket list….

My husband and I have had a few days by ourselves on his sister’s farm. She very kindly said we could make use of the property and she is to come back and join us again tomorrow.

Every time I have been to the UK, I have wanted to see a few animals that we don’t have in New Zealand. Those animals are squirrels – both grey and red – Badgers and foxes. Up to tonight on this trip, I have seen grey squirrels but no red ones.

So tonight, my husband and I went for a walk at dusk. We crept along quietly and stopped for a while and waited where we knew there were Badger’s sets nearby. My husband was lucky enough to see a fox, but unfortunately I didn’t.

We walked on a bit further and my husband beckoned to me and just round the corner was a Badger. So cool! Then he went just round the corner to see if it came out the other side. Then while he wasn’t looking another Badger ran across the field and disappeared from sight. By the time I got his attention he missed it.

So there we are. Another bucket list item. I have seen not one but two Badgers.

Happy days. So glad I have such a lovely husband to go Badger hunting with. No Badgers or Foxes were harmed during this event!

I am a retired Social Worker having retired in May 2024. I had been a Social Worker for over 20 years and for the sake of my health and wellbeing I chose to retire early. I have some literary projects underway and am enjoying the freedom of no longer working. Working on my projects at my own pace and enjoying my new hobby of lawn bowls is a wonderful thing. No regrets and a new kind of busy in retirement is wonderful.

  1. You’re soooo lucky!
I’ve always had a soft spot for badgers ever since I read the Wind in the Willows as a child. I’ve never seen one in situ though. I’ve heard that they are rather reclusive animals, so you were very fortunate.
These are my two favourite Emma Bridgewater mugs. Maybe you could look out for one while you’re in the UK, to remind you of the experience when you’re back in NZ?

SO glad you are having such a wonderful time.
