I have three children, two boys and a girl, my daughter being the youngest. Being the only girl in the family and the youngest can be a pretty tough gig at times. I know, because I was the youngest of four and the only girl.
When my daughter was young, her two older brothers would often leave her out of things and although she was quite happy most of the time to play by herself, every now and again she would be a bit disappointed at not being included.
I started taking her out for ‘mother/daughter’ treats just the two of us. We would have a look around the shops and I’d buy her a couple of hair ties and then we would have a ‘sneaky treat’. The rules were that I would take her to McDonalds for a cheesburger and fries and that she wasn’t allowed to tell her brothers, or I wouldn’t give her the special treat just for her. As far as I know, I don’t think she ever told her brothers and I used to look forward to just the two of us going out together.
Today, when we went out for lunch together, my daughter bought lunch and it was lovely to be treated to an adult lunch with my adult daughter. She remarked that it was a ‘sneaky treat’ just for us and that it was her time to treat me.
On the way home, I thought about how I would take my Mum out from time to time and buy her lunch when she was older. She seemed to enjoy our time together just the two of us. Now it’s my turn to sometimes have my daughter treat me. Both my daughter and I love our husbands and our children, but we both agreed that it is a rare treat for just the two of us to get together.
I look forward to more ‘sneaky treats’ in the future!
It sounds lovely!
