The gentle art of sleeping in..

I am still working four days a week, from Monday to Thursday. I have Friday, Saturday and Sunday off. Last night my husband said to me, ‘We’ll be able to sleep in tomorrow, no hurry to get up.”

So, here I am at just after 7.30am sitting at my computer, messing around on Facebook, checking my email and writing this Blog. I used to LOVE sleeping in. Snuggling up in a warm bed and drifting off to sleep again and getting up at 8.00am, 9.00am, 10.00am… sometimes later! Bliss! Not now, unfortunately!

I am not sure why, but once my eyes open, latest probably about 7.00am, I try to have a lie in but usually get fidgety and have to get myself up. I toyed with the idea of reading for a while, but didn’t want to wake my husband. Should I get up and have a cup of tea? I would dearly love to be able to luxuriate in bed and go back to sleep, but it seems my friend Parky has other plans for me.

It’s not even that I am not tired. By the end of Thursday, I am really tired from a busy week both physically and mentally. I know I could not go back to working 5 days per week and look forward to my three day weekend.

I also find that as tired as I might be, I can’t seem to go to bed and go to sleep without it being about 11.00am most nights. Perhaps we just need less sleep as we get older? Or is it the Parkies effect?

Meanwhile it’s 7.44am and my husband sleeps peacefully on…

I’m off to make a cuppa!

I am a retired Social Worker having retired in May 2024. I had been a Social Worker for over 20 years and for the sake of my health and wellbeing I chose to retire early. I have some literary projects underway and am enjoying the freedom of no longer working. Working on my projects at my own pace and enjoying my new hobby of lawn bowls is a wonderful thing. No regrets and a new kind of busy in retirement is wonderful.
